Southern Business School is proud to announce registration and accreditation of our Bachelor of Business Administration Honours (BBA Hons.) degree! The qualification is registered as a degree on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 8. As such, it provides vertical and horizontal external articulation possibilities with all public and private higher education institutions that offer comparable studies at NQF level 8 on the New Qualifications Framework (NQF level 7 on the previous qualifications framework).
Our long-term plan is to ensure that a learner can become a lifelong learner at Southern Business School, in line with the national goal of developing a culture of lifelong learning. The programmes offered by Southern Business School are the Certificate in Management on NQF level 5, Diploma in Management on NQF level 6, Bachelor of Business Administration degree on NQF level 6, Bachelor: Policing Practices degree on NQF level 6, and the Advanced Diploma in Management on NQF level 7. The Bachelor of Business Administration degree bears direct relationship to the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours degree. The Bachelor of Business Administration degree currently offered by Southern Business School was initially developed with an Honours and a Masters degree in mind. The planning for a Bachelors of Business Administration Honours degree has stretched over a number of years and is the rational result of an institutional growth process, both in terms of growth in institutional experience and capacity, and in the programmes currently on offer. The application is the result of extensive planning and market research.
The focus of the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours is on Strategic Management, Leadership and Research. This is augmented by the study of economics, finance, project management, and international management. Flexibility is provided with a choice of human resources, marketing, public management, and other key areas of business studies. Holders of this qualification may therefore be responsible for managing people, resources, and/or projects, including the management of human resources, public relations, advertising, promotions, portfolios, projects, etc.
The flexible structure of the qualification enables individuals and organisations to select outcomes that meet the diverse roles and contexts required by a wide range of industries and the public sector.
The Bachelor of Business Administration Honours provides a framework of knowledge and skills needed in the industry and public sector and essential to progress along a career path for learners who wish to extend their range of skills and knowledge of the industry and public sector so that they can become knowledgeable workers and/or practitioners in management. The Bachelor of Management Honours allows the learner to work towards a nationally recognised whole qualification. The qualification will allow both those in formal education and those already employed in organisations access, due to its flexibility. It aims to develop individuals who are informed and skilled in management.
The qualification has building blocks that can be developed further and will lead to a more defined management career path at Masters Degree level. It also focuses on the skills, knowledge, values and attitudes required to progress further. The intention is:
- To promote the development of knowledge and skills that is required in all sub-sectors of management.
- To release the potential of people.
- To provide opportunities for people to move up the value chain and between the different sectors of the economy.
The Bachelor of Business Administration Honours should produce knowledgeable, intellectually skilled individuals who are able to contribute to improved productivity and efficiency within the organisation. It should provide the means for current individuals in the general management field to receive recognition of prior learning and to upgrade their skills and knowledge base. The qualification is structured in such a way that exposes individuals to a set of core competences to give a broad understanding of general and public management and the electives, which will allow for a specific competence in management. It will also promote the notion of life-long learning.
The programme meets the national requirements pertaining to programmes which are at present being developed within the context of the NQF with relation to non-unit standard based qualifications. The qualification is currently in the process of being registered on the National Qualifications Framework and will be presented through the medium of distance learning. The programme design will be registered on the NQF by SAQA and the learning material and learner support will address the goal of maintaining an appropriate balance of theoretical, practical and experiential knowledge and skills.

You do qualify. The suggested duration is one and a half years.
8 subjects: Strategic Management and Leadership are compulsory core subjects. Compulsory fundamental subjects are Research Methodology and Project, Managerial Economics, Financial Management OR Public Financial Management, International Management and Project Management. One elective is compulsory. The elective subjects are Human Resource Management OR Marketing Management OR Public Management OR Disaster Risk Management.
We will post comprehensive information on the qualification before the end of next week.

I have a BBA and Advance Diploma in Management and would like to do this new honours degree. What I would like to know is why is this at level 8, which I think is a Masters’ level and in the same token why is it not discipline specific like HR or Labour relations, because these are the lines I would like to pursue.
In the same token, what is the advantage of me having done the Advance Diploma.
Your prompt and positive response is appreciated
Regards

Jack, the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) changed recently. Some qualifications that were on NQF level 7 are now on NQF level 8 (Honours degrees are now on level 8, Masters degrees level 9).
With regard to Advanced Diploma versus Honours degree, the choice is yours to make, depending on whether you prefer obtaining an advanced diploma or an honours degree. Also note that the Advanced Diploma will stay on NQF level 7. You will therefore obtain a qualification on a level higher than the Advanced Diploma in Management. In addition, you may qualify for subject exemptions on the honours degree, depending on the subject mix of the Advanced Diploma you obtained.
Note that Human Resource Management is one of the elective subjects. The core of the qualification is pure management.

i would like to know what is the difference between the research prescribed for the BBA compared to the one that will be offered on the BBA ( hons) degree, and also i see the proposed period is 18 months instead of a year programme why is the programme so long in comparison to other honours programme

The research prescribed for the BBA is on an NQF level lower than that of the BBA Honours degree. It is, in effect, preparation for the research at honours level.
The proposed period is 18 months in order to make it easier for working students to complete the qualification in a reasonable time frame. It is a recommendation – if you are confident that you will be able to complete the qualification in one year, you may be allowed to register four subjects per semester. Completing the qualification in a year implies that you study full time towards the degree.

What is the difference between current BBA (without Honours) and the new BBA Honours. What does “Honours” mean. Does it mean the current BBA is not “honourable” enough?

The NQF consists of ten levels. Level 1 is the equivalent of the end of Grade 9. NQF levels 2 to 4 are the Further Education and Training (FET) levels. Level 4 is the equivalent of the Senior Certificate awarded on completing Matric. Level 7 is the level of a first degree (a Bachelors degree), and Levels 8 to 10 are post-graduate levels.
The main difference between the BBA degree and the BBA Honours degree is that the BBA degree lies on level 7 on the new NQF and the BBA Honours degree on a higher level, namely level 8 on the NQF. In other words, you need to obtain a BBA degree (or equivalent) to enrol for an honours degree.
