BBA Hons Degree
Overview
The qualification is registered as an honours degree on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 8. As such, it provides vertical and horizontal external articulation possibilities with all public and private higher education institutions that offer comparable studies at NQF level 8 on the New Qualifications Framework (NQF level 7 on the previous qualifications framework). The degree carries 132 NQF credits.
The Focus of the Qualification
A specific focus on enabling competent global managers in Africa, and an emphasis of the practice of management work together to make this a managerial qualification of note. The degree focuses on the South African environment, while enabling managers to cope with the realities of management in a global context. The BBA Honours has been designed to enhance managerial competencies, equipping managers with the essential skills that form part of everyday managerial activities.
The main subject areas of the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours is on Strategic Management, Leadership and Research. This is augmented by the study of economics, finance, project management, and international management. Flexibility is provided with a choice of human resources, marketing, public management, and other key areas of business studies. Holders of this qualification may therefore be responsible for managing people, resources, and/or projects, including the management of human resources, public relations, advertising, promotions, portfolios, projects, etc. The flexible structure of the qualification enables individuals and organisations to select outcomes that meet the diverse roles and contexts required by a wide range of industries and the public sector.
Minimum Duration & Language
The minimum duration of the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours degree is one year. We suggest that most students structure the qualification in such a way that it can be completed in one and a half to two years. The language of tuition is English.
Composition of the Degree
The degree consists of eight subjects.
Strategic Management (24 credits) and Leadership (18 credits) are compulsory core subjects.
Compulsory fundamental subjects are Research Methodology A and B (30 credits), Managerial Economics (12 credits), Financial Management OR Public Financial Management (12 credits), International Management (12 credits) and Project Management (12 credits).
One elective is compulsory. The elective subjects are Human Resource Management OR Marketing Management OR Public Management OR Disaster Risk Management (12 credits).
Access to the Qualification
To be admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours degree:
- Students must hold the Bachelor of Business Administration, B Com or B Compt degree or another approved degree in the field of Business, Commerce and Management Sciences; OR
- Be in possession of another degree and have passed at least five courses from the field of Business, Commerce and Management Sciences, including at least Economics I, Management Practice I, and Accounting I.
Students with B-degrees older than 10 years may also apply for admission to the BBA Honours and such requests could be handled in two possible ways: Students must repeat Management Practice III, which forms part of the BBA degree; OR Students must apply to the Head: Academic by submitting a CV, providing evidence including references that they have been employed in the selected subject area during the past 10 years (or longer), thus having kept abreast with developments in the field.
Costs
- A once off registration fee of R990.
- Subjects are R 1580 per subject except for Research Methodology A (R900), Research Methodology B (R1120) and Strategic Management (R2020) per subject.
- Re-registration fee of R350 for every additional semester.
